Passport Photo Requirements
Your passport photo must meet strict U.S. Department of State standards.
Photo Specifications
All passport photos submitted with your application must comply with the following requirements set by the U.S. Department of State. Photos that do not meet these standards will be rejected and may delay your application.
- Must be a recent color photograph taken within the last 6 months, printed on photo-quality paper.
- Dimensions must be 2 inches by 2 inches (51mm x 51mm).
- Head size must measure between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches (25mm to 35mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
- Your facial expression must be neutral with both eyes open, looking directly at the camera. No shadows should appear on the face or in the background.
- Wear normal, everyday clothing. Religious garments worn daily are acceptable.
- The background must be plain white or off-white only.
- Hats and head coverings are not permitted unless worn daily for religious purposes. Your full face must remain visible even with a head covering.
- Headphones, wireless earbuds, sunglasses, and similar accessories are not allowed in passport photos.
- Hearing devices may be worn in passport photos if you can provide medical certification documenting their necessity.
- Prescription glasses are no longer acceptable in passport photos as of November 2016. All eyewear must be removed.
